Course Introduction

This program aims to impart research-oriented knowledge, skills, and attitudes in Buddhist Studies, catering to diverse academic and professional backgrounds. While candidates are not required to have studied Buddhist Studies at the undergraduate level, completion of a Post-Graduate Diploma in Buddhist Studies serves as a special qualification for admission.

Following a comprehensive survey conducted by the Department of Pāli and Buddhist Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Ruhuna, the program has been developed to address the acknowledged requirements and subject areas that students seek to study in the field of Pāli and Buddhist Studies. All activities from the registration of Postgraduate Examiners for the above course to the awarding of the relevant degree will be conducted in accordance with the relevant regulations by the Department of Pāli and Buddhist Studies, University of Ruhuna. These are advanced degrees designed to help students strengthen their subject knowledge and skills related to Buddhist theories, practices, and research methodologies beyond the undergraduate level.

This Master of Arts in Buddhist Studies program fulfills a critical educational need in the Southern region of Sri Lanka while maintaining academic excellence comparable to established programs at other universities. The program's unique positioning offers students access to rigorous Buddhist scholarship within an accessible geographical location, making advanced Buddhist education more inclusive and widely available.

Eligibility Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s degree including 30 credits in Buddhist Studies, OR
  • A qualification of SLQF level 6 or above in the subject area, OR
  • A professional qualification equivalent to SLQF level 6 or above, OR
  • Completion of NVQ level 7 with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 0-4, as determined by the Board of Study (BOS), may be considered.

    The Department offers two distinct postgraduate programmes in Buddhist Studies: the Master of Buddhist Studies (SLQF 09) which is a full-time course consisting of two academic semesters organized over one academic year, and the Master of Arts in Buddhist Studies (SLQF 10) which is a full-time course consisting of four academic semesters organized over two academic years.
