The Master of Animal Science (MAnimSc) and Master of Science in Animal Science [MSc (AnimSc)] programmes are designed to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in the rapidly expanding livestock and poultry sector in Sri Lanka. These programmes aim to equip graduates with advanced scientific knowledge, technical expertise, and problem-solving abilities to support industries such as dairy, poultry, and aquaculture, while contributing to national economic development.
The MAnimSc is a one-year (full-time) coursework-based programme with an option for part-time study, focusing on theoretical and practical training in key areas including animal nutrition, genetics, production systems, animal reproduction, animal product technology and aquaculture. In contrast, the MSc (AnimSc) extends over two years and includes a 1-year research component (30 credits), allowing students to develop in-depth analytical and research skills through a supervised project and thesis. Both programmes are structured to accommodate working professionals, with flexible scheduling and industry-relevant learning components.
Overall, these degree programmes provide a comprehensive pathway for career advancement in animal science, catering to graduates, industry personnel, and early-career professionals. By combining coursework, practical exposure, and research opportunities, the programs aim to produce competent graduates capable of addressing modern challenges in animal production and contributing to sustainable development in the livestock sector both locally and internationally.
